NOTED ART MUSEUM CURATOR BOB WORKMAN TO PRESENT “A NEW DEAL FOR ARTISTS: ART PROGRAMS OF THE WPA 1933-1943” AT MAY 24th MEETING OF HSV BRUSH STROKES ART CLUB
With the stock market crash of October, 1929, eventually one-quarter of the U.S. workforce became unemployed. Through programs created by the Roosevelt administration beginning in 1933, millions of unemployed Americans earned a modest living through the opportunities of the Works Projects Administration (WPA). Over that decade, five New Deal programs were launched that included support for visual artists. The surviving art created through those programs includes easel paintings, sculptures, post office murals, prints, graphics and photographs. Collectively this art serves as a rich visual record of a critical period in the history—and art—of our country.
